Biography

Zainul Abedin, revered as Shilpacharya (Master of Arts) is regarded as the founding figure of modern Bangladeshi art. Born in Kishoreganj, he spent much of his childhood along the banks of the Brahmaputra River. The river's changing moods and landscapes left a lasting impression on Abedin, later inspiring his celebrated ‘Brahmaputra’ watercolour series (1938), which earned him the Governor's Gold Medal and brought him early recognition. Abedin studied at the Government School of Art in Calcutta graduating with distinction before joining its teaching staff. This academic environment strengthened both his technical skills and his social consciousness. Between 1951 and 1952, he pursued further studies at the Slade School of Fine Art...
